'Lets Have Fun'
That is the motto for the 2009 Outback 4x4 Challenge.
In total there are 27 teams from all over Australia as well as one team from both South Africa and Switzerland and two from Venezuela. Taking a look at the list of competitors it should not be difficult to have fun - there are some familiar faces, and even Laurie Griffiths is coming back for his eleventh year.
Sanctioned by the Cross Country Drivers Association (CCDA) there are two classes of vehicles; Challenge and Production. Challenge Class consists of highly modified vehicles whereas Production Class fits into a more modest budget but is still tackling the same courses and is more than capable of winning the event.
After running for a decade the move to a more exclusive, fun and intimate event has been well received by all involved. The hard working group of marshals have been meeting every month since September ensuring that as soon as the competitors sit on the start line, it becomes very serious with the best designed special stages, marshalling and safety to be found in Australia.
There are night stages every night except the Wednesday and the quarry stage on Sunday is new and exciting with some interesting half-time entertainment.
The theme of fun is continuing with a more interactive website for competitors, marshals and spectators where they can log on and get updates and downloads of information specifically designed for them before the event.
There are still a few places available for spectators and more information can be found on our spectator pages here on the website.
Many Challenge aficionados know Macca and Karen from Red Desert who do our catering (and much more) as well as Mark Lowry from , all of whom were affected by the recent bushfires.
Macca and Karen will be back again in the kitchen this year at the event and with a twist of an arm we might get Mark there too.
Ready for the next decade of Challenges?
The In May 2008 The Outback 4x4 Challenge celebrated 10 years of Australia’s best off road action. Packed full of action it featured drivers from all over the world including, United Kingdom, South Africa and Venezuela.
The year 2009 is the beginning of a new decade for the event. Competition Manager Paul Vanderhorst has taken all the best features of the challenge and incorporated them into a fresh exclusive event, open to 30 Australian plus International four wheel drive crews and a limited number of spectators.
The event is no longer held at different properties at the same time, the whole entourage moves as a group to each of the different outback locations. Scores will be progressive at each location.
Whilst we have always had great recovery teams and dedicated rescue and trauma medical professionals onsite, we can now have one dedicated team to handle this for greater continuity and extra safety.
Special stages will still be as long, varied and exciting, as before, in fact it’s the special stages that will be taking priority and now as one big group everyone gets in on the action.
Sanctioned by the Cross Country Drivers Association (CCDA) there are two classes of vehicles; Challenge and Production. Challenge Class consists of highly modified vehicles whereas Production Class fits into a more modest budget but is still tackling the same courses and is more than capable of winning the event.
Special stages are the number one priority and they will be longer, tougher and more demanding than ever on crews with less downtime and more competition time.
Unlike other four wheel drive events in Australia, the special stages at the Outback 4x4 Challenge are extensive, creating a true test of endurance and skill for all teams, which have included international teams from; Malaysia, France, England, Scotland, New Zealand, The United States, Alaska, Venezuela and South Africa.
